It’s 10pm and you’re finally doing the marketing

Stop doing all your marketing yourself. Build an AI marketing team.

How small business owners can hand the marketing jobs they’d normally pay for to AI helpers that know their business, and stay in control of every one.

!Sound familiar? Posting when you remember, then nothing for weeks.

If you run a small business, you know the feeling. The work is done, the family is fed, and now you open the laptop to write a post, chase a quote or work out why the website went quiet last month.

I’ve worked in marketing for over 25 years, and I see the same thing every week. Good business owners doing their marketing whenever they can fit it in, posting when they remember, then nothing for weeks. Not because they don’t care, but because there’s no budget for an agency and no time to do it properly.

This year that changed. You can now build your own AI marketing team: a set of AI helpers that know your business and take on the marketing jobs you’d normally pay someone else to do.

You stay the boss. They do the legwork.

The people you’d normally pay

Five marketing jobs, and what replaces each one

Most small businesses need the same handful of marketing jobs done. Until now that meant hiring a person or an agency for each one, or doing it all yourself at 10pm.

Instead of a copywriter or social media freelancer

Writing posts, emails and web copy

Drafts them in your voice, using what it knows about your business and your customers.

Your part: Read, tweak, approve

Instead of a lead generation agency

Finding new customers

Checks your emails, spreadsheets and CRM for leads that went quiet, finds prospects like your best customers and drafts a message for each.

Your part: Approve each message before it goes

Instead of someone to chase leads and run your CRM

Following up enquiries

Sends welcome and follow up emails in your voice, so nobody goes cold.

Your part: Write and approve the emails once

Instead of an SEO company

Getting found on Google and in AI search

Checks your pages, suggests what to change, and writes the blogs and FAQs people search for.

Your part: Agree the changes

Instead of a marketing agency’s monthly report

Knowing what’s working

Tells you in plain English where enquiries came from and what each customer cost.

Your part: Decide what to do more of

The difference?

You own it.

What your AI team learns about your business stays with you, and it gets better at every job the more you teach it.

How it works

The Brain first, then the team

You don’t start by switching on a load of robots. You teach AI about your business, then add one helper at a time. This is the 5 step process I use with clients.

Your businessYour customersYour offerYour competitorsHow you soundYour resultsAIMarketing Brain
  1. 1Get clear on your marketingWork out who your best customers are, what you offer them and where you’re losing them now. Otherwise your AI just does the wrong things faster.
  2. 2Build your AI Marketing BrainOne workspace in an AI tool such as Claude that holds everything about your business: customers, offer, prices, competitors and how you sound.
  3. 3Add specialist agentsEach agent does one job, like drafting your posts, preparing follow up emails or finding people to contact. They all share the same Brain.
  4. 4Let it learnEvery post, quote and enquiry teaches your Brain a little more, so each job gets quicker and better.
  5. 5Stay in controlYour agents draft and prepare. You approve the things that matter, and you decide when to pick up the phone.

Let’s be honest about it

What AI can do for your marketing, and what it can’t

AI is brilliant at the jobs that eat your evenings. It drafts, sorts, checks and reminds. What it can’t do is know your business without being taught, or replace the conversation where someone decides to trust you.

What it does well

  • ✓Drafts posts, emails, blogs and web pages in your voice
  • ✓Spots old enquiries and quotes that went quiet
  • ✓Prepares a list of who to contact, with a message ready for each
  • ✓Explains your results in plain English

What it still needs you for

  • ★Teaching it about your business in the first place
  • ★Approving anything that goes out to a customer
  • ★The phone calls and meetings that win the work
  • ★Connecting it to your email, CRM or website, if you choose to

Rather not connect AI to your accounts? You don’t have to. You can export your data, give it to your AI yourself and still get most of the benefit.

Your questions answered

AI marketing for small businesses: FAQs

The questions I’m asked most when I talk to business owners about building an AI marketing team.

Can AI really do my small business marketing?

AI can draft your posts, emails and blogs, find leads that went quiet, prepare follow ups and explain your results in plain English. You still teach it about your business and approve anything that goes out to a customer.

What is an AI Marketing Brain?

It’s one workspace in an AI tool such as Claude that holds everything about your business: your customers, your offer, your prices, your competitors and how you sound. Every AI agent you add works from the same Brain, so everything sounds like you.

Will an AI marketing team replace my marketing agency?

For many small businesses it covers the jobs they would normally pay an agency, copywriter, SEO company or lead generation agency for, such as content, follow up and reporting. You stay in charge of the strategy and the conversations that win the work.

Do I need to be technical to build an AI marketing team?

No. If you can use a laptop and email, you can build one. You start by teaching AI about your business, then add one agent at a time, checking its work as you go.

How much does an AI marketing team cost to run?

The main ongoing cost is your AI tool. Claude has a free plan to start, and its paid plan is around $20 a month. Some jobs also use tools you may already pay for, such as your CRM or email marketing tool.

Is it safe to connect AI to my email and CRM?

You choose what to connect. If you’d rather not connect your accounts, you can export your data and give it to your AI yourself, and still get most of the benefit.

Where to start

Basics first, then the tools

AI built on a muddled offer or the wrong customers just makes the muddle faster. So the first job is always getting clear on who you want and what you’re offering them.

That’s exactly how I’ve built the Pink Elephant Academy. It takes you step by step from understanding how marketing really works, to building your own AI Marketing Brain, to adding the agents that find customers, write your content and follow up your enquiries.
